Who we are

The Jersey One World Group was formed in April 2007   It drew on groups such as Oxfam, Christian Aid, CAFOD,  Amnesty and others who had been part of the 2005 ‘Make Poverty History’ campaign

The aims of the Jersey One World Group are to -
* enable people to recognise the links between their own lives and the lives of those throughout the world  .
* increase understanding of the economic, social, political and environmental forces that shape our lives
* develop skills, attitudes and values that enable people to work together to bring about change
* work towards a just, sustainable and peaceful world

Activities to date
* Campaiging in 2008, including a showing of the film ‘Message in the waves’ at the Arts Centre in Feb. 2008, led to a decision by leading supermarkets to charge 5p for one trip plastic bags.  Subsequently their use has fallen from 15 million per year to less than 1 million, and altered our wasteful shopping habits.

* Organising activities during One World Week in October.  This year’s theme is ‘Hungry for One World’

* ‘STOP THE TRAFFIK’  project. Meetings and campaigning will culminate in November to highlight an illegal trade greater than drug traffiking and just behind arms trading, traffiking of people

* In 2010  we will be celebrating 40 years of Overseas Aid work parties and projects by Jersey people and looking for future developments.

* We will also be considering issues of sustainability and how we can live in a more sustainable way.
