Islanders are being encouraged to sign up to spin for the 2012 Jay Morris Spinathon in aid of Jersey Hospice Care. This will be the tenth year that family, friends and Hospice supporters have signed up to take part in the event which raised £15.585 last year.
The event is being held at Club Carrefour, St Lawrence, on Saturday 25 February 2011. About 100 people will be sponsored to spin - cycle on a stationary bike - in one hour slots from 11am to 6pm, led by Club Carrefour's instructors, who give their time free of charge in support of the event.
Jay, who was a keen racing cyclist and founder member of the Velo Cycling Club, died from cancer at the age of 30 in 2003. He had every intention of taking part in the first Spinathon, which was originally set up to raise awareness of his illness.
Sadly, Jay died a few weeks before the event was due to take place but his family has continued to organise it every year since as much a tribute to Jay and a fundraiser for Jersey Hospice Care. It's very much a family affair, Jay's brother Sam first took part when he was eleven years old, Jay's father, Alan, takes part every year with his wife Jenny and Jay's widow, Sharon, who comes over from England for the event. /More... Spinners sought to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Jay Morris Spinathon/2
Alan Morris said: "It comes around so quickly but we're very much looking forward to the event again. We have about 60 spinners who have taken part every year since it began and the support we get is fantastic, particularly from the event sponsors Club Carrefour, Mark Pickford Cycles and Spar. Knowing Jay is in everyone's thoughts, spurring them along really makes it very special to us.
"We'd love as many people as possible to sign up and come along and join the fun. You don't have to have known Jay to take part as the event is open to anyone, of any age, keen to take part. Even if you've never spun before, it's very enjoyable, so come along and join us."
Spinners can book hour slots by completing a registration form available at www.jerseyhospicecare.com or by phoning 871559. There is a registration fee of £10 per person, which includes a T-shirt, and it's hoped as much sponsorship as possible will be raised by participants.
