Guide Dogs for the Blind
Looking for Volunteer Boarders to temporarily look after Guide Dogs The local branch of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association is very keen to hear from any Jersey residents who may be interested in volunteering to become a guide dog boarder.  After appropriate training, a guide dog boarder will be called upon, possibly at short notice, to look after one of Jersey's seven guide dogs in the event of the owner being temporarily unable to look after their own dog due to illness or to board the dog whilst the owner is off the Island on holiday.  The ideal criteria for a guide dog boarder would be the following:
  • A physically active individual or couple who are retired or who are at home all day who can give the guide dog structured walks twice a day
  • An individual or couple who work from home
  • An individual who could take the dog to his or her workplace
  • The home environment must be suitable, ie large enough, to accommodate a large dog with a safe and secure garden
  • Preferably there should be no other pets in the home
  • The individual or couple must be able to follow very precise instructions from the guide dog owner on matters relating to diet, exercise and grooming
  • An ideal boarder would be a previous dog owner who no longer wants a full time commitment but enjoys the company of a dog for short periods of time

Boarding a guide dog can be a very rewarding experience for both the boarder and the guide dog.  Due to the very specific selection and training of guide dogs, they tend to be extremely loving, intelligent and lots of fun.  Boarding a guide dog will also give the volunteer a fascinating insight into the world of guide dogs.  For further information please contact Ken Syvret MBE, Chairman, Guide Dogs for the Blind Association Jersey Branch, tel no 481043 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
