The Stroke Association

Looking for 'Befrienders'.

We are flooded with volunteers to help one-to-one with people with speech difficulties but struggling to find people to help with stroke patients who have been affected in other ways i.e. no speech issues. However their illness might mean they are unable to get about without the help of a carer, who might themselves struggle to find the time because either they work, have a family to care for or basically have little spare time available. Thus many stroke affected people have limited access to the wider social networks that most of us enjoy and their world becomes rather limited. We are looking for people to act as befrienders i.e. to spend a little time chatting, playing a game, sharing an interest, maybe taking them out for a coffee or a little drive. Each person will have individual needs and the time and details will be agreed between the befriender and the client to suit both of them. It is not expected that a large time commitment will be involved but some regularity in meeting up would be appreciated.
