Cost of living crisis hits local charities
The Association of Jersey Charities (AJC) announces today the results of a survey of its members carried out in January and seeking their responses to the rising cost of living. The key findings were as follows:
• 88 per cent expected to see a reduction in fund raising income due to the impact of higher costs on Islanders;
• 66 per cent expected an increased demand for their services as a result of the cost of living crisis;
• 95 per cent were concerned about the impact on the charities and the causes they serve; and
• 55 per cent would like to see Government do more to support the charitable sector.
Kevin Keen, chairman of the AJC, says: “These results are unlikely to surprise our community but they are very important nevertheless. Although we would clearly like to see Government do more to support this sector, there are things we can all do to support local charities and the important work they do.”
Many activities cost very little and can actually save Islanders money, e.g.:-
• Offer to volunteer some of your time to an Island charity;
• Donate good quality merchandise to the many charity shops operating in the Island;
• Donate an extra tin from your weekly shop to collections for local foodbanks;
• Shop for clothing and other items at Island charity shops. there are some great bargains to be had and you will also be helping the planet; and
• Encourage your employer to adopt a charity in Jersey.
“Of course, donations are also important and just donating the price of a cup of coffee every week will add up if we all do it.” says Kevin Keen. “There is a further incentive to make a cash donation because if you are a taxpayer the Government will add a further 25 per cent to your donation if it exceeds £50 in a year.”
In the coming months the AJC will be featuring on their social media different member charities, providing a reminder of their work and how they are dealing with the current crisis.
