Riding for the Disabled Need Volunteers

Riding for the Disabled Association Jersey has been established in the Island for over 40 years and provides opportunities for children and adults with a range of physical and/or learning difficulties to take part in an active sport and learn to ride. This not only improves their confidence, wellbeing and social skills, but delivers a real and lasting therapy that strengthens core muscle groups improving mobility and coordination.

RDA Jersey operates from Le Claire Stables in St John with a large outdoor sand school, and currently runs eleven rides per week, term time afternoons, for around 60 people.

Volunteers are a very important part of RDA and fundamental to the continuation of the charity and what it is able to offer. We are currently looking for new volunteers who enjoy outdoor activity, have reasonable physical fitness and work well with children and/or adults. We welcome all ages – from students (16+) as part of Course/Duke of Edinburgh Award requirements through to retired people looking for a valuable way to use their free time. No horse or riding experience is necessary to assist our riders. Each participant generally requires three helpers, one to lead and control the pony and up to two side walkers for safety and guidance. Basic training will be given and a DBS check will be required. Progression may be possible if desired.

There are hourly sessions of up to four ponies every weekday afternoon, term time only and volunteers can choose what sessions would suit them, and how many hours they would like to offer. Anyone interested in volunteering is very welcome to come and visit the stables during a ride to see what it involves, and watch the special relationship between rider and pony that makes RDA such a positive experience for everyone involved. RDA Jersey is a community and our volunteers are rewarded with a real sense of camaraderie and purpose, as well as making a difference to the lives of others.
