Annual Grants Media Release, April 2019
More than £226,000 awarded to island charities by the Association of Jersey Charities …and a total of more than £1m given in grants over the 2018-2019 financial year
Charity education/awareness staff and programmes, conservation work, vehicles and equipment are just some of the items to be funded following the most recent successful Association of Jersey Charities grant applications.
11 members were successful in their bid for financial support and £226, 129 is to be distributed to members as follows.
• Société Jersiaise - £50,000 to help fund La Cotte de St Brelade conservation project
• Autism Jersey - £30,000 to help funding of new fundraising events and awareness manager
• Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust - £30,000 to help fund the Durrell Schools Education programme and Jersey Zookeeper talk programme
• Caring Cooks - £30,000 towards salaries
• Abbeyfield Jersey Society - £25,000 for new lift for residential home
• 7 Overseas (Jersey) Squadron Air Training Corps -£18,139.00 for purchase of cockpit kayaks and a trailer
• Jersey Rescue Dogs – £14,000 towards the purchase of a new Ford Transit van for transporting the dogs locally and fundraising
• Jersey Biodiversity Centre - £13,740 for salary of a part time education and outreach officer
• Jersey Hospice Care - £7,250.00 for cost of non-invasive ultrasonic bladder scanner
• Jersey Marine Conservation Society – £5,000 towards the cost of new larger R.I.B.
• Jersey Eating Disorder Support - £3,000 for operational expenses
The latest monies awarded are the last of the financial year, with officers reviewing grant applications and membership requests every quarter. Over the past 12 months 44 funding requests from 42 charities were successful with £1,100,740.58 being awarded in total by the Association of Jersey Charities.
Earlier funding requests this year have created new jobs in the island with various new positions including an NSPCC therapist to help sexually abused children rebuild their lives, a neuro-physiotherapist and a sacro-cranial therapist to work with islanders affected by a brain injury (Headway). Alongside significant monies to help around 60 families with their monthly groceries (Grace Trust), funding has also been provided to improve the visitor experience at Jersey museum with bespoke museum cases and a Handmade Jersey exhibition occupying the whole of the second floor.
In addition, refurbishment works to the entire interior, the kitchen and communal lounge and the rooms (see accompanying photos) at Jersey’s Sanctuary Trust have improved the living facilities for homeless men in the island and 7 families in need of support to build healthy relationships and wellbeing within the family (Brighter Futures) have also been supported as a result of successful AJC charity grant applications.
The AJC has members ranging from large organisations providing essential services to the community, local branches of national charities and smaller local charities, organisations, clubs and societies championing the needs and concerns of particular groups within Jersey.
Each year, the Association receives the Jersey share of the Channel Islands’ lottery profits from the Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture Department to distribute to its members specifically for the benefit of the people and island of Jersey.
Applicants have to demonstrate sufficient need and show that the grant is both for the benefit of Jersey residents, and for a charitable purpose, for example the advancement of education or the advancement of religion or the relief of or research into ill health or any other purpose of benefit to the community.
